Being confident is difficult for everyone...everybody's got their something that they struggle with. For me, it was my skin tone. Yeah, "black is beautiful" and all that but for some it's only beautiful if it ain't TOO black, you feel me? A few blogs have almost single-handedly changed years worth of self doubt where I'm concerned. I hadn't even realized how big an impact seeing people I don't know from a hole in the wall on a computer screen, has helped shape the way I view myself. I realize that this influence can as often be negative as it is positive, but thankfully there seems to be a trend of black women in particular being proud of what we bring to the table. So I'd like to say thanks to all of you out there in Blogland, because you've made my life a lil' easier just by being you and putting it out there!

A Comprehensive Guide To Bringing Out The Worst In Retail Employees.

I've worked in retail for about five years now, and among many things I've noticed that some people really like to be treated badly by sales associates. Why else would so much of the general public behave like buffoons when shopping?
Some exercise attention-seeking methods, others treat the store's product like an AMNY newspaper, and the rest just push the limits of sanity. I'm here to present to you a list of fool-proof tactics to making a salesperson have visions of strangling you, then exporting your children to a sweatshop.

Respond inappropriately to a salesperson's greeting.

When a salesperson says 'Hello' and asks how you are doing, do not say hello back. This will make the salesperson think you are a decent human being and worthy of common courtesy. The appropriate response is to assume that the salesperson is out to rob you of your savings account and reply with a terse "JUST LOOKING". This response sets the proper tone of your visit to the shop, and helps the salesperson prepare for an encounter that will involve no blinking and directly glaring angrily into your soul.

Make yourself unapproachable, then ask for help in an exasperated manner.

Enter the store on your cellphone. Do not end the conversation. In fact, increase the volume of your voice. Make sure your conversation is of a topic that both embarrasses yourself, and creates the need for an earlier than expected Sex Talk for any parents who happen to be in the shop with their children. Once you've completed your conversation, spin around in a circle shouting "DOES ANYBODY WORK HERE?! CAN I GET SOME HELP?" until someone comes and helps you. This behavior will provide the salesperson some much-needed pep in their step, as their goal has now shifted from actually helping you to politely rushing you out of the store before they lose self control and shove you into traffic.

Initialize an interaction with a one word question.

Honestly, salespeople are all retired clairvoyants. That's why they've entered the field of retail; so that they can sit around all day and help people who use of the English language can only be described as abusive figure out what it is exactly they are looking for. So you'd only be doing them a favor if you were to enter the store, walk up to them and ask: "Sweatshirts?" Don't worry about the rest of the question; the ex-clairvoyant standing in front of you will be able to determine whether you're asking if that particular store carries any, if you have any business wearing one, if you're asking them if they personally own any, or if you're suggesting a way to properly start a fire in someone's closet.

Force the salesperson to operate within your delusional body image.

If you're a "fat" size 4 don't trust the salesperson to know what size to pull for you. Who cares if they deal with this clothing 40 hours a week; make them start you off with a size 12 and work your way down each size until you reach a size 4. If you're a man who is a size 30 in jeans and still believes you have massive biker thighs, don't spend any less than 45 minutes trying on three different pairs of the same cut. The goal is to recreate the feeling of a hamster wheel for the salesperson. Once the salesperson has been reduced to the kind of person that sails pieces of clothing at the customers in fitting rooms your job is done.

These are just a few suggestions to help you get started. If you've tried these methods and are still receiving excellent customer service, then I need to remind you that getting drunk and throwing your ex-boyfriend's clothing out of a window with the help of your friends does not constitute a day of shopping.

Upon showing my mother my blog she asked "Doesn't it bother you that a lot of the girls in the photos you post don't look like you?". She was referring to shots like these, and I can say wholeheartedly, "NO!". I have no problem envisioning myself wearing looks that I like no matter who's modeling them. Do I still think that there needs to be a broader spectrum in fashion? Of course! But for every girl like me who has no limits on what I can pull off (at least in my own mind lol), there are many more who are discouraged by the images they're being bombarded with. So my advice is to see YOURSELF in the photo...no matter how dark, light, big, or small you are. Don't see yourself fitting the mold, see the mold fitting YOU.

I never wear lipstick. My lips are a pale pink and any color I wear (except dark, muddy colors) isn't the true hue on me. If I were lighter skinned, that wouldn't matter as much, but because I'm darker, I need the color to be as vibrant as possible. So I hit up Rite Aid and invested in a few 99 cent reds from Wet n' Wild and put a little foundation on my lips before applying. This one is a matte red number 911D. What do we think???

I hit up the Boxing Kitten trunk show and sample sale at Ferality Show on the LES today, and scored this Althea skirt from the Fall 2009 collection for $50. I'm excited to be able to support, but I gotta say, with the exception of the bustier tops, the construction is pretty simple. Boxing Kitten is all about the fabrics and prints because the skirts and shorts patterns are beginners sewing level. Don't get me wrong, the pieces are well-made. But I left the store inspired to bust out my sewing machine and get crackin' (which is a GOOD thing). Either way, I love my new skirt and I'm glad to see Maya Lake doing her thing...

*NOTE* - The sizing is a bit wonky on some pieces (could be the reason why they were in the sample sale). I'm definitely a Medium in this line, but they had no more in this print. On a whim, I grabbed the Large in the print I wanted, compared the waistband to the one in the other print that I wasn't as crazy about and it was the same width. So the one I bought is probably a Medium and labeled as a Large. Try before you buy...

Calvin Klein...came with the elastic belt shown and a fabric belt that matches the coat. Yeah, the sleeves are a tad short but my arms are so damn long that it's unavoidable in most cases. I compensate with my sweater and shirt sleeves so that I don't look like a knuckle-dragging cave woman. And YEAH, I'll cut the "100% Wool" tag off the sleeve. **UPDATE** Just finished playing dress-up and I really have to stock up on tights because these look awesome with just about every mini-dress I own. For those of you who don't know, I've been on the hunt for a lower-priced clog boot. I LOVE all of the incarnations I've found but I'm on a budget. I was tooling around in JC Penney in the Manhattan Mall with my cousin who's in from Jacksonville, on Friday. They sell Spring shoes in the women's department and I saw these for $79.95. Yasssssssssss! I tried them on in the store and ordered a black pair online (round up if you're a half-size). So excited!!!

I went to pick up a coat at Marshalls that I had on lay-away (YES, lay-away...Con Ed came first that week, hence my ability to communicate with all you lovely people). Of course, I can't just go straight to the counter and be done with it...I HAD to mosey through the shoe department. And WHAT, pray tell, did I stumble upon???

The Sam Edelman "Zoyla" booties for $129.99!!!!! Yikes. These bitches are at Nordstrom for a hundred bucks more! It's just as I suspected...TJ Maxx and Marshalls, are buying current season merchandise. Now if they would just finagle a deal with Jeffrey Campbell, I could sleep peacefully at night. I left these in the store because they were HELLA uncomfortable. That brings me to DSW...

In my obsession with platforms and clunk, in general, I forgot how AWESOME a stiletto can be. Cheap ones are a waste of time because they look, well...CHEAP! A well-made shoe makes even the homeliest foot beautiful. My feet are pretty sexy, but these make them look even better (modest, I know). Enter DSW and these Max Studio suede stilettos....$47.65 green-tagged in the clearance section. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Ummmmm...yeah already. NYE 2009 was a BLAST. It was my first time spending it out partying as an adult (don't ask). I wore a faux leather H&M mini-dress that I'd purchased a few months before because I KNEW I'd need it at some point. Lo and behold, I got word of some last minute party action. Needless to say, half my wardrobe didn't end up on my bed because I had "the dress" on standby. I like that approach. So I'm looking to replicate it. A few ideas...click the photos for sources.
